BLACK PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD

Your history.

Black is beautiful and diverse!

I’ve spoken about this before in relation to appropriation of Egyptian heritage, and I’m gonna do it again. American conceptions of race based on skin color CANNOT be applied around the world. Black American heritage and experience is distinct from that of a black person in Africa, the Caribbean, or anywhere else, and is in no way even RELATED to that of a dark skinned Indian person. This photo also makes the mistake of once again conflating all African cultures with each other based solely on their blackness. PLEASE, that only reinforces the same kind of stereotypes and insensitivities that we’re trying to fight. The experience of someone Nigeria is not the same as that of someone from Egypt or Somalia or the Congo, and none of them are the same as that of a black person in America. Please understand this. Please do not conflate all dark skinned people with each other. Please do not consider their history and culture to also be yours.
